The second type of cupcake cake is similar in that it is also requires a large quantity of cupcakes arranged together to resemble a larger cake, but this type is usually is displayed on cupcake stands or cupcake tiers and is usually decorated in a repeating pattern or color scheme. This kind of cupcake cake is generally more formal and may be seen at weddings and showers. The last interpretation of a cupcake cake is a large cake in the shape of a cupcake. You can achieve this cupcake cake by using a special cake mold.

For this article we will focus on the first example of a cupcake cake (or pull-apart cake), a group of cupcakes arrange and frosted in a specific shape like numbers (for ages), sports, holiday decor, flowers or anything you can imagine! The benefits of using this style of cake is that it makes serving and clean up easy, which makes it ideal for children's parties and large gatherings. Here's how they work:

1. Start with a box cake mix for ease, bake cupcakes according to package directions using two cupcake liners per well, for added strength and structure.
2. Let cupcakes cool completely before continuing.
3. Arrange cupcakes on a sturdy cake board, you can also use a covered piece of wood or extra firm cardboard. When arranging the cupcakes into your design try to get the grooves of the cupcake papers to interlock to ensure there are no gaps between cakes. A staggered arrangement is usually best for this.
4. To keep the cupcakes in place apply a small dab of icing (butter-cream works best) on the bottom of each cupcake and place it to your board.
5. Once all of the cupcakes are in place apply a small 'crumb-coat' of icing to keep the finishing coat of icing from collecting crumbs. Let this layer harden before continuing.
6. After the crumb-coat dries apply the final layer of icing to the entire top of the design and decorate as you wish!
